Keeping baby healthy during pregnancy… ?
December 08, 2009Ok, I am 17, and pregnant, no comments on my age please, i am keeping the baby as it is my responsibility to.
I would like to know what food to avoid, any things i should stay away from. If i should still walk the dogs, if i should do yoga or something. I would like to keep the baby as healthy as possible, minimize the risk of miscarriage, and complications. Can i take painkillers??
Congrats on the baby, and I’m proud of you for keeping it! He or she will be a real blessing in your life. As far as food to avoid:
Deli meat (unless cooked to steaming about 160 degrees)
Soft cheeses (unless pasturized)
Raw eggs (unless pasturized, double check salad dressing labels as there are raw eggs in a lot of them)
Sushi/raw fish, shellfish
Alcohol and cigarettes are off limits (obviously)
Make sure to take prenatal vitamins as they will lower your risk for a miscarriage dramatically (and prevent spina bifida, etc.)
You can take Tylenol, but don’t use anything else without your doctors permission for pain killers
Colace is really nice as a stool softener when constipated (a common thing in pregnancy)
Exercise is safe and encouraged, just keep it light (walking, swimming, yoga, etc)
Also, they say you should avoid chemical smells such as gas (see if someone else can fill your tank), paint (though I know a lot of people still paint their nurseries), and you should avoid touching pet feces. I hope this helps and good luck!

These are questions for your doctor, not a message board.
While you’re waiting for your first appointment, pick up a copy of the book “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” You can find it at major book stores as well as the baby department of places like Wal-Mart. It will answer every question you have plus many that haven’t even occurred to you.

It is best not to take pain killers. Take prenatal vitamins, if you can’t take those (I couldn’t, because they stopped me up) Then take 2 flinstone vitamins fortified with iron per day. Walking is great, so is yoga, any type of exercise is good. Don’t do more than you did before, but if you were an avid runner before you were pregnant, it is still okay to run! You can eat anything you wont throw up, Don’t eat meat (including seafood/sushi) rare/raw. Avoid alcohol (duh). And you should be golden!

painkillers, absolutely not, just tylenol for pain.
Just do as you would normally do, best not to smoke or drink or do drugs.
excerise is good so keep walking those dogs. Yoga would be great until you can’t move due to your belly size! They have a lot of excerise dvd’s for pregnant woman too.
Get "What to Expect When Your Expecting", it’s a great book that will answer all your questions.
best of luck.

If you drink, smoke, or do drugs you are harming your child, and then I believe that could cause you to miscarry naturally. But if you do what you normally do… Eat… Drink… Exercise… Most likely it won’t happen. Sometimes miscarrying happens to those who did everything right. Just depends on how the baby is developing. Congrats.

You are not suppose to take painkillers…. You can take tums in moderation though. No caffeine, you can eat fruits and veggies, i would keep walking the dog, don’t change the cat litter box if you have one, do not start any big activity that you have not already been doing but any active things you are doing now you can continue. Also if you don’t want people saying things about your age you should not have posted if. (not being rude but just saying… i wouldn’t if i did not want rude comments) I am sure you will be a great mom. My sister had her first baby at 17 and did ok! She is now working on her masters degree today!

ok well you should not eat raw fish, drink alcohol, eat spicy food, drink tea, try not to eat too much meat, and also if you have cravings, you should fulfill them, unless if its one of the above. walking your dog is great. keep yourself nice and healthy
hope i helped!

heyy congrats first of all. I am also 17 and even though im random i am so happy you are keeping the baby.
ok a good thing for you to do is basically try and stay away from real suguary foods. Carbs arn’t really that bad because the baby has to eat also. Walking is actually REALLY good for you when you are pregnant. When you get really far along walking can induce the labor. So walking your dog would be fine. I would try also to get your daily intake of vegetable and fruits whether it be a food or in juice form…try to get your daily vitamin intake. I would also think about trying to get vitamin C pills so your inmune system will become stronger.
Oh and it would be helpful if you had a juicer or blender so getting all your fruit and vegetable intake is easier. Or just have some V8.
there ya go <3 good luck

My dr told me to avoid most fish, all raw foods, deli meat, certain types of cheese (you can still have mozerella, cheddar, colby jack, things like that). Of course you should avoid alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and caffiene (that includes coffee and soda). You can still walk the dogs and walking and swimming. If you aren’t used to being very active consult the doctor before you start an exercise program. You can’t take anything besides tylenol for pain. Hope this helps and good luck!

DO NOT TAKE PAINKILLERS. Everything else though, go to the American Pregnancy Association website and it has loads of information on all of this. Good luck and congrats!

Avoid: raw or under cooked meats, non-pasteurized dairy products, fish that are high in mercury, alcohol, cigarettes, most drugs
Eat: lots of fruits & veggies, plenty of calcium and protein, a prenatal vitamin
Exercise: Keep up your normal routine such as dog walking, but don’t start anything new or strenuous without talking to your doctor first
Painkillers: regular strength Tylenol only unless your doc specifically tells you something else is OK.
Good luck, and God Bless

Eating vegetables dark green in color have lots of vitamis: things like fresh spinach have lots of folic acid which is good for the baby- fresh squeezed orange juice as well. Bananas are rich in potassium. Fresh fruits and vegetables are really good - you want things high in folic acid, potassium and iron. I would avoid too much fried food or junk food as well as shark (if you are into fish). You can still walk the dogs, walking is great for you and the baby. If you excersiced befoe you were pregnant - light exercise could still be done - things like walking, yoga, light water aerobics - remember - not to start any kind of excersice that you did not do before you were pregnant unless you have discussed it w/ your doctor first. When you are pregnant you should not take anything other than tylenol should you need it but not on a regular basis unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. Painkillers are not good for the baby.

you should have received all this information from your doctor or midwife. Ask them they will give you the best information because they know you better than people on yahoo answers. But seriously you must eat healthy foods, avoid booze and smoking. Avoid eating soft cheeses and mouldy cheeses. Try to stay away from nuts as well and also liver as liver has a very high vit A content which can be harmful to the baby. Congratulations by the way and I dont know you but I am very proud of you for being mature enough to accept responsibility of your actions and not taking the easy route out. Well done, others should learn from you. If you are old enough and well enough to get pregnant then you should be old enough to accept it and be responsible.
Now as for pain killers you can only take paracetamol unless your doctor says otherwise. Do not take any other medicine, even herbal meds. Also you should try to do exercise, nothing heavy but a good bit of walking and other light exercises are good. Best of luck!

No judgment on age… I was also a Mom at 17 now 46 … I still think it was best for me to have kept my baby too …
As far as eating just do what you normally do just add prenatal vitamins … You can eat want you want … just DON’T eat for TWO that’s just a way to get fatter and avoid alcohol and pain killers.
Always ask your Doctor any questions you have, make a list of questions for your appt with him.
Walking the dogs is good, exercise is good. Don’t do more than you did before.

You can still walk the dogs, take prenatal pills along with a folic acid pill, eat lots of veggies, and stay away from any fish that contains mercury like tuna, and any shell fish, you can eat shrimp but limit yourself. No fresh cheese for example mexican queso fresco. No raw meats either. The obvious no beer or drugs =-) You should also buy that book, what to expect when your expecting, great book. GL
