During pregnancy did you have trouble with the sciatic nerve ??

December 03, 2009

I am 12 wks into my second pregnancy. When I was pregnant the first time, throughout the pregnancy I had alot of pain from the sciatic nerve in my lower back. I had very sharp pains just from moving about. Labor was not painful except for that nerve. Now in my second pregnancy I am getting a little pain from that nerve again. Am I doomed to be in pain forever?! Is there a way to ease the pain or maybe yoga. I am interested to hear from others who have problems with this pesky nerve. What did you do?? Man it really bugs, and I feel hopeless at times.

Thnx. ;)
I know how you feel - it sucks. I had it before pregnancy and it has gotten so much worse. My doctor suggested heat (didn’t work), and said some women try physical therapy. But basically you just have to live with it. I’ve found that stretching helps a little, and sometime using ice instead of heat. The best thing is when my husband gives me a good, strong massage on my lower back and into my butt. It hurts while he does it, but after it feels much better.
Hopefully, we’ll both be feeling better after delivery!

I had real trouble when pregnant and walking was very painful - I just dealt with it as i did not want to take any drugs - Now my baba is 8 weeks and i am suffering with carpel tunnel - never mind eh>> He’s worth it!!

I’m 16 weeks and am having lower back pain. I looked it up and it’s very unlikely that it’s sciatica but rather lower lumbar pain. Apparently only 1% of pregnant women have sciatica. Anyway the only suggestions that it gave were a heating pad on your lower back, slow stretching (in a pool works well) and then going to a chiropractor. Good luck!

I had extremely bad back pain throughout my pregnancy, everytime i walked i pinched a nerve and found it very difficult to walk. in the end i was very limited to what i could do so i went to a physiotherapist who gave me special exercies on a fit ball and floor which helped ease the pain. there are also pregnancy support belts which fits underneath your bump and relieves pressure on your spine. There is also Anti-inflammatory drugs (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) will help relieve pain if sciatica continues after your baby is born, but shouldn’t be taken in pregnancy. Steroid injections can also be given after the birth to relieve pain
i did have sciatica but there is no evidence to suggest that sciatica is caused by anything specifically related to pregnancy. Pregnancy related changes can cause pelvic pain and back ache, but not sciatica. The majority of women who think they have sciatica during pregnancy actually ahve a condition known as pelvic girdle pain. Sciatica is not caused by the baby pressing on a nerve. In younger people, it is often caused by damage to a disc leading to inflammation around the nerve or direct pressure from a prolapsed or ’slipped’ disc.

I feel your pain!!! Or at least I have felt it in the past. I had sciatic nerve pain with all three of my boys. Ay yi yi, or perhaps I should say Ow wow wow. Once the little ones were born the pressure to the nerve was alleviated. Love and Luck–MissDelanne
