What Is In a Pregnancy Yoga Video?

October 10, 2008

A pregnancy yoga video often starts with some safety precautions. The safety of you and your baby should be one of the first things addressed in any pregnancy yoga video you get. The first yoga positions will often be ones where you do focused breathing exercises. This piece of a pregnancy yoga video can help you calm and focus yourself.

From that point, pregnancy yoga videos will differ in which poses they do and in which order. You can pretty much count on positions that strengthen your legs, squat positions and the downward facing dog position. Kegel exercises will also be part of the pregnancy yoga video exercises. Throughout the video there will be a focus on your breath and letting your breath help you release any tension.

The final part of a pregnancy yoga video will be a relaxation pose. This is a great chance to help you focus on yourself and your baby. You can relax fully and let go of all tension and stress in this pose. It is also a wonderful way to connect with your baby.

Is this a good plan?

October 07, 2008

I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant, so I'm not trying to change anything right now. However, I'm doing research on the most effective ways to build a healthier lifestyle & lose weight/tone up. I was once told that to keep your muscles stimulated (I can't think of a better word) that I would need to change-up my routine daily. So, would this example be a good starting point (when I'm given the green light from the Dr.)
Monday: Jump Rope Cardio 25 minutes
Tuesday: Yoga 30 minute video
Wed: Weight Training
Thursday: Something like Tae Bo video
Friday: Pilates
Saturdays: Walking with the baby outside (Im not sure if I would need one or two days off)

I've spent these last several months learning how to cook healthy meals and I feel I have a good grasp on that aspect of it. I'm just wanting to make sure that my home workouts are as effective as possible with the limited time I'll have as a new mom.
Pre-pregnancy I was 5'4" 130, I'd like to reach 125 (gained 20 with pregnancy so far)
My husband comes home from Afghanistan in December, so hopefully I'll be on a steady pace by then!!

And, I'm NOT going to be doing anything while pregnant. I do pre-natal pilates & I feel good about it!
That last "edit" wasn't very clear. I am currently involved in a pre-natal excercise routine, pilates. That I have been doing since I found out I was pregnant. I feel like I've kept myself in good shape (as good as possible)

Thanks for the confirmation of my starting plan, I will definitely make sure to wait until the doctor clears me & I'll start out slow.

That sounds great! Of course after your 6 weeks checks etc. But maybe build yourself into it gradually, like start excersising 3 days a week at first then build it up. I've had 3 babies and it is hard to make time for yourself but it's not impossible, it's important to give yourself a bit of time. Try not to be to worried about getting back to your pre pregnancy size quickly though, just enjoy your new baby. Good luck with everything x

Helpful Poses in a Pregnancy Yoga Video

September 28, 2008

The most helpful poses in a pregnancy yoga video are those that can help you with the unexpected and unusual aches and pains that come with pregnancy. And I would say that the second most helpful poses in a pregnancy yoga video are those that can help with childbirth. The top poses in my book for each category are:

For pregnancy aches and pains: Since back pain was a big issue for me during my pregnancy, I like the pose that helps with this issue. You get on your hands and knees. Hands directly under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then slowly arch your spine up and bring it back down. This is definitely my favorite pose from a pregnancy yoga video to help with those kind of aches and pains.

For help in childbirth: Deep squat exercises with kegel exercises is my favorite pose that can help you in childbirth. The deep squat that you see in a pregnancy yoga video can help strengthen leg muscles and open hip joints. You might want to even think about this one for childbirth as it is reported that it can shorten the birth canal by up to 20%. The kegel exercises that you do in this deep squat can help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, some of the muscles you use in childbirth.

Pregnant and downward facing dog yoga pose?

And yes, I am serious.

What? Are you serious? At five months, you're baby is doing cartwheels most of the time - he's got 4 months to get into the proper position. Doing yoga has NO effect on it's position.

What You Will See In A Pregnancy Yoga Video

September 19, 2008

In a good pregnancy yoga video, you will see the yoga exercises being done by women in different stages of pregnancy. Ideally, the video should have a woman from the first, second and third trimester doing the different yoga poses. What your body can do during the three different trimesters changes and it is important to be able to actually see what those changes are.

Another thing you will see in a good pregnancy yoga video is great explanations of every pose. This is especially important if you are new to yoga. Having good explanations of what the different poses are important to helping you really understand what you are asking your body to do.

Cautions for keeping you and your baby safe is also part of a good pregnancy yoga video. You should never do anything that is painful and a good video will make that clear to you. It will also show you what is safe for you.

What types of yoga are not safe during pregnancy?

September 17, 2008

I know there are certain moves you shouldn't do, does anyone know what they are, is a traditional yoga video ok if I know what they are?

All types of exercise can be beneficial to pregnant women, and specifically yoga can be very beneficial. Of course, if you are starting a new exercise plan you should check with your doctor. But, for most women who want to continue, or try yoga it is completely safe, with a few modifications and precautions. Common sense dictates that if, during your pregnancy, you are uncomfortable on your back you should avoid any pose that includes lying on your back. However, while experts are torn on this subject there is some concern that lying on your back could restrict blood flow to your uterus and cause you to be dizzy, light headed or short of breath. Additionally, you should avoid lying directly on your stomach after your fourth month, or sooner if it becomes uncomfortable. Use a chair or the wall to help keep your balance. While your body is changing your center of gravity may be a bit skewed and falling could harm yourself or your baby. Bend from your hips, not your back. To improve breathing keeping distance between your breastbone and your pubic bone will help. If you bend forward while sitting you can use a towel wrapped around your feet while holding both ends to help avoid squeezing your abdomen. While bending from the hips, lift your chest – this will also help. Keep your pelvis upright when you stretch your chest and or thighs. Take special care with twisting poses. Try to twist more from the shoulders than the abdomen. During pregnancy your muscles are particularly prone to strains because your body is producing hormones to help your uterus relax. These hormones affect all your connective tissues, so make sure that you don’t over do any stretch, taking special care with your abdominal muscles. Make sure you pay attention to your body’s cues. If any thing is uncomfortable you should stop. As your baby grows you will need to make greater accommodations. For specific ideas on what to do while you are pregnant you may want to try Yoga for Pregnancy: Safe and Gentle Stretches by Sandra Jordan or the video Yoga for your Pregnancy with prenatal expert Kristen Eykel as your guide.

It has been said that yoga can be very beneficial during pregnancy, but why? Not only does it help you stay fit, it helps improve your energy level and allows you to become more in tune or intimate with your body. Yoga can help with the aches and pains of pregnancy and with mental issues such as moodiness. In turn, yoga can help you have a smooth pregnancy and natural childbirth. Yoga exercises, through a series of gentle stretches, help tone the reproductive organs, pelvis and the rest of your body to ensure an easier childbirth. Yoga breathing exercises, and the act of controlling your energy (or Prana) provide your baby with vital oxygen and the energy from that oxygen. If you are a strong breather you will be more fit and ready for childbirth. Just as Lamaze teaches breathing techniques, so does yoga. Additionally, mastery of yoga breathing techniques can help ease the tension of labor and could help decrease the possibility of postpartum depression. Once you learn meditation through yoga you will have an incredible self awareness that will put you in tune with your baby. It is well known that meditation can help alleviate stress, poor health and fatigue.
