Preparing for childbirth is one of the most wonderful experiences that you can ever have in your life. Getting your mind and your body ready to bring a new life into the world is both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. To help prepare both your mind and body for this amazing experience is important not only to you but to your baby and anyone else who is sharing in this experience with you.
One of the best ways to prepare your mind and body for the birth of your child is through a prenatal yoga DVD. The exercises can help you prepare your body for childbirth while the breathing and meditation can help you prepare your mind.
Getting proper exercise while you are pregnant is great for helping you keep your body in shape so that the physical strain of childbirth can be easier for you. A prenatal yoga DVD with proper exercises and stretching techniques is a great way to keep your body toned and limber while you are pregnant. Prenatal yoga can also help you ease the aches and pains that come with pregnancy.
Another great thing about getting a prenatal yoga DVD is that it will also teach you breathing techniques. Learning to control and calm your breath is great for helping you through childbirth. Breathing properly during this process can make a huge difference in how you handle the pain that comes during childbirth. It can help you control and react to it better.
What you can do physically changes with each trimester. Because of that, it is vital that you get a prenatal yoga DVD that offers different exercises for every trimester. What is easy in the first trimester may be impossible or unsafe by the time you get to your third trimester. A good prenatal yoga DVD will take that into account and will show you the proper techniques for where you are at in your pregnancy.

Some of the best benefits of pre natal yoga have nothing to do with getting physically fit. The mental aspect of yoga in general and pre natal yoga in particular can improve how you view your life and your pregnancy.
Yoga has an amazing ability, unlike other forms of exercise, to deeply connect you to your body, the earth and your fellow human beings. All you have to do is tune in to the energy. The added amazement in pre natal yoga is the ability it has to help you connect to your unborn child.
When you do pre natal yoga, you have the opportunity to really connect to your child and the miraculous gift that is your pregnancy. It is easy to get bogged down by looking at the aches and pains that can accompany pregnancy. Your body goes through many changes when you are pregnant but doing pre natal yoga can tune you into the miracle of what it means to have another life inside of you.

The most helpful poses in a pregnancy yoga video are those that can help you with the unexpected and unusual aches and pains that come with pregnancy. And I would say that the second most helpful poses in a pregnancy yoga video are those that can help with childbirth. The top poses in my book for each category are:
For pregnancy aches and pains: Since back pain was a big issue for me during my pregnancy, I like the pose that helps with this issue. You get on your hands and knees. Hands directly under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then slowly arch your spine up and bring it back down. This is definitely my favorite pose from a pregnancy yoga video to help with those kind of aches and pains.
For help in childbirth: Deep squat exercises with kegel exercises is my favorite pose that can help you in childbirth. The deep squat that you see in a pregnancy yoga video can help strengthen leg muscles and open hip joints. You might want to even think about this one for childbirth as it is reported that it can shorten the birth canal by up to 20%. The kegel exercises that you do in this deep squat can help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, some of the muscles you use in childbirth.

I read that yoga is great for expecting mothers. Is pilates though since it involves much more abdominal work? Are there poses in yoga to avoid? I'm only 5 weeks along. So, I'm not sure when and/or if to avoid doing certain poses.
I took pre-natal yoga classes with both of my babies and a pre-natal pilates with my second child. It helps SOOOOO much because it keeps you strong and you'll learn how to relax certain parts of your body and that is key during labor/delivery.
I definitely recommend you look into taking a class like these, for expectant mothers, because they are amazing. Also, it helps get your pre-baby body back quicker.
Good luck!

Yes. They teach special "expecting" classes for yoga. But always ask your doctor to just be on the safe side. Every pregnancy is different.

I am 14 weeks pregnant and having only been walking occasinaly so far for exercise. I was so paranoid about something happening to the baby. Well now that I am in my second trimester and feel a little more relaxed, I was considering using a prenatal yoga DVD, however I have not done yoga before. Is it safe to start this up??
I wouldn't suggest you start with a DVD. Enroll yourself with a yoga instructor until you get use to it. Only to make sure you are doing the poses correctly. When you're confident enough go for the DVDs.

Knowing what pre natal yoga positions you can and cannot do is important for the safety of you and your baby. Talking to a yoga instructor who knows pre natal yoga is a good place to start. It is also a good idea to check with your doctor if you are unsure of what you can and cannot do for exercise. But simply listening to your body is one of the most important things to keep in mind when you are doing pre natal yoga. Your body will tell you if you are pushing too hard. All you have to do is pay attention to what your body is telling you. Remember that it is not just you that you have to be concerned about but your baby as well. Never do any poses that cause you pain or make you feel uncomfortable.

Depends on your pregnancy and the type of yoga you do, in my sisters case she was doing yoga until the day she delivered

So, I am 31.5 wks and this past week I have been getting increasingly more uncomfortable. I was online looking for some stretches for my back and ran into yoga. Is it too late in the pregnancy to get a prenatal yoga dvd? Which ones would you recommend? Thanks!
I don't have any sort of stretches that I have been doing. I was never advised in that- all I was told to do was walking. Now I really wish I would have thought of that before. Any suggestions?
yoga is great for you and baby– but i would call or ask your doctor first…
i wasn't doing it all the time b4 hand, but my doctor said i could do it anyway.

Hello I am 5 and a half months pregnant. I have been doing pregnancy yoga. The video shows pregnant women doing the downward facing dog pose. I am afraid to do this pose b/c it might confuse the baby and make him turn breech. Is this founded?
I can't imagine it would cause breech position
